How should a thesis containing a large number of tables, equations or formulae be formatted?
In this article, we explain how to format a thesis that contains a large number of equations, formulae or tables. At Persoonlijk Proefschrift, we have extensive experience in formatting such theses, and we’d be happy to explain our approach to you.
Tables
The styling of your tables is included in the interior design of your thesis. If you have chosen one of our interior design options that offers a great deal of creative freedom, this also applies to your tables. For more information and inspiration on table design, Read more here…
Comparisons and formulae
Word has a special equation tool for inserting formulas, symbols and equations. If you have used this feature, it is not possible to customise the appearance of your equations, formulae or symbols. This is because this Word feature is a specialised system that uses a specific font. This font contains all the characters required for equations. Other fonts are not as comprehensive. If you were to choose a different font, you would run the risk of missing characters.
If you haven’t used Word’s equation feature, but have inserted special characters as normal text, it is still possible to change the appearance and font of these characters.
The cost of a thesis containing a large number of tables, equations or formulae
If your thesis contains fewer than 30 tables, equations or formulae, we will include these in the layout free of charge. If there are more than that, a surcharge of €109 applies in principle.
In some cases, this surcharge may be waived. This may be the case, for example, if an identical table, equation or symbol is repeated in a thesis, either unchanged or with only minor alterations. In such cases, our coordinator may decide on your behalf that the surcharge does not apply to your situation.
Details
- Up to 30 examples, equations or tables in your thesis are free of charge;
- For orders of 30 items or more, a fixed surcharge of €109 (excl. VAT) applies;
- This surcharge may be waived if, in our view, the high volume does not result in virtually any additional design work. This decision can only be made by our coordinator;
- Anything inserted into a manuscript using Microsoft Word’s equation feature is considered an equation or formula;
- Anything inserted into a manuscript using the table function in Microsoft Word is considered to be a table.
