Standard thesis cover
At Persoonlijk Proefschrift, we distinguish between two types of cover: a standard cover and a premium cover. In the Personal Thesis Package comes with a standard cover, in our Premium package It comes with a premium cover.
In this article, we clearly explain what a standard cover entails, so that you can get a good idea of what to expect from the design of a standard cover. There is a separate page with more information about a premium thesis cover.
Templates for a standard cover
In principle, the layout of a standard cover is simple: your designer inserts an image you have provided and formats the text on the cover. This also includes the invitation (usually in the form of a bookmark).
This sounds very specific, but there are plenty of possibilities: the most important thing to remember is that we no extensive editing We can do whatever you like with the image you provide, but we’ll simply place it exactly as you wish. For a standard cover, we’ll take care of no bespoke illustrations.
A standard cover in a row
- Please provide a good-quality image. If you’re unsure whether the resolution is high enough, your designer can check it for you and let you know.
- The background colour of your cover is included.
- The image can be placed in several places, such as on the front and back covers and on the bookmark. If the quality is high enough, the image can also cover the entire cover.
- Your designer will place this on your cover. This includes the positioning, size and cropping of the image.
- The layout of the text on the front and back covers, spine and bookmark is included. This means that the font, size and position of the text will be tailored to your requirements.
- Following the initial consultation, you will receive a draft proposal. You can provide feedback on this three times, after which you will receive the final version.
A touch of luxury?
If you have an image that needs minor editing, this can always be arranged. However, it is very difficult to estimate how long such edits will take. In consultation with your designer, you can arrange for additional edits to be carried out at an extra cost of €32.50 per hour (excl. VAT). Following the consultation, your designer will be able to give you an estimate of the number of hours required. Please bear in mind, however, that these hours may sometimes exceed expectations – not everything can be foreseen in advance. In the case of a premium thesis cover You can be sure that everything is included – so if you’re considering a lot of edits, this might be a good option for your thesis cover. Always discuss this thoroughly in advance with the coordinator and your designer, so that they are aware of the situation and we can help you as best we can.
The right image for your thesis cover
You might already know exactly which image you want to use on your cover. If not, we’d be happy to help you decide. For example, you can order an image from us for €25 per image Shutterstock.com purchase. You can find out more about these (free) options in our knowledge base stock photo websites.
If you’re stuck, your designer will be happy to help you find a solution. If you’re really lacking inspiration, you can always ask your designer to brainstorm with you. Do bear in mind, however, that the time available for this is limited within a standard cover design.
Standard thesis cover
Editing an image?
A seemingly simple task can sometimes take a long time, depending on the task and the exact specifications of the image. Cutting an object out of an image (or removing the
(background) can sometimes be done with a single click, for example, but often the outlines need to be cut out manually; something that takes considerably more time. Always discuss your requirements with the coordinator or your designer.
Premium cover
Type of cover based on the final result
Another common source of confusion is judging whether a cover is standard or custom based on the end result. This is due to the wide range of image databases. Based on the final result alone, you cannot therefore tell whether this image was available and used on the cover (as with a standard cover), or whether a designer created or painted it themselves and then edited it (a custom cover). Do you have a specific example Have you seen our website and are you unsure whether it was a standard or custom design? The coordinator can check this for you.
